Phrae dates back to 1371 when it was constructed during the Sukhothai period and served as the capital of the Kingdom of Phrae. It then became part of the Lanna Kingdom when King Tilokaraj was on an expedition to capture Nan. Phrae's city walls were probably built during the Lanna period although I’ve read that they could date as far back as the 7th century Haripunchai kingdom of the Mon that had their capital in today’s Lamphun.

During the late 1800s, Phrae served as a major centre for the teak trade, with numerous foreign companies operating around the town such as the East Asiatic Company and the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation. Logs would be floated down the Yom River to Den Chai and then put onto trains and sent down to Bangkok where they would be loaded onto ships and exported. The town has several beautiful teak mansions which I explore in this video plus several nice temples. The Kingdom of Phrae ended in a rebellion in 1902 with the last king going into exile in Luang Prabang in Laos.
