When god had a wife - Ed Dodge

Описание: Today I spoke with Ed Dodge, author of "A History of the Goddess from the Ice Age to the Bible."

As we talked through his story and his book, we discussed many topics, including:

• Growing up in a liberal Christian context where rationality was strongly emphasized.
• Realizing that the picture of the divine godhead of Judaism and Christianity is missing a mother figure, and that she was originally there but was later removed from the narratives and traditions.
• How cannabis was sacred to the ancient goddess traditions, and how goddess theology in Judaism died out as religious cannabis use died out.
• How comparative mythology helps us see that Judaism and Christianity are nothing more than mythologies, and how that knowledge helps us escape our religious indoctrination.
• The bizarreness of the Yahweh character preferring to kill his own Son than to kill the Devil.
• How the Yahweh character, if he were real, would have been setting up humanity to fail by making sex so pleasurable and then putting major restrictions on how we pursue it.
• That all the gods we have invented, including Yahweh and Jesus, are projections of the human mind.
• How early religions connected the idea of heaven with the Father figure and the earth with the Mother figure.
• Realizing that the ancient Jewish people were polytheists in the Bronze Age, with a father god El, a mother goddess Asherah, and "children" demigods such as Ba'al, long before they eventually became monotheists as they invented Yahweh and claimed he had become the high god, and eventually, the only god.
• The origins of patriarchal religion and the start of the demise of goddess worship in Israel.
• The importance of admitting that we only have the patriarchal versions and redactions of many historical events, which frequently do not reflect historical reality.
• How religions pursue and require conformity and centralized authority.
