On July 21, 2017, our group of Everett Mountaineers set out to climb Sahale Mountain, a prominent peak in the heart of the North Cascades. We began at first light forging our way through a steep untamed climbers trail over fallen trees through thick brush. After two hours of this, the canopy of trees opened to reveal a moonscape basin once carved by glaciers, now covered in part with green meadows and flowing icy creeks. Jagged rock and snow-capped peaks rose high above the basin. We navigated across ancient rocks and climbed higher making kick steps in the snow. At roughly 7,200' we roped up and traversed the Quien Sabe Glacier. For the last pitch of the summit block, we set a fixed line and prusiked up the class 4 rock scramble. We rappelled off the south side of the summit block and descended to Sahale Glacier Camp. The wildflowers were stunning on Sahale Arm! We arrived back at Cascade Pass trailhead at 7:30PM after an unforgettable day.
