We explore whether Pakistani art authentically represents the nation and discuss the myriad challenges that come with producing art in a country where self-expression can often be stifled. Saad provides his perspective on the success and controversy surrounding the film Joyland, which faced multiple bans within Pakistan due to its provocative themes, and he discusses whether there’s a place for taboo subjects within the Pakistani film industry.
We quickly delve into the struggle for artistic freedom as many Pakistani artists face self-censorship and the dilemma of potentially replicating Indian content rather than fostering a unique Pakistani identity. Saad also shares his experiences dealing with censorship as a filmmaker and what it means to "sell out" in the art world. Despite limited public art spaces, Saad points out the growing public appreciation for art in Pakistan whereby both the elite and the common person can find common art to appreciate. Addressing the misconception that art is reserved only for the elite, Saad did express concern that cultural heritage may be prioritized over contemporary artistic expression.
Highlighting some of Pakistan’s most courageous artists such as; Sheema Kirmani, Shireen Pasha, Salman Toor, Ali Sethi and Arooj Aftab, Saad discusses the valuable contributions they bring to Pakistan’s image globally, along with the challenges of navigating a rapidly advancing technological world where the local art scene remains unprepared for AI. We discuss complex issues like the perceived conflict between art and religion in Pakistan, while acknowledging the shared cultural history between India and Pakistan that continues to shape both countries.
Saad offers advice to young artists, urging them to learn from genuine history rather than relying on popularized myths about historical figures. He shares the inspiring story of Ahmed Shah, who bravely kept a girls’ school open under Taliban threats after his father’s brutal assassination. We also discuss the often-overlooked stage dancers in Pakistan, who consistently sell out shows despite a lack of high-brow recognition. Finally, Saad shares his hopes for government support for creative initiatives and encourages the public to uplift and sustain the arts in Pakistan.
