Reaction Components:

Active methylene compound (usually an aldehyde or ketone with at least one hydrogen atom adjacent to a carbonyl group)

Base (typically a weak or non-nucleophilic base like sodium ethoxide or piperidine)
Mechanism:

Deprotonation:
The base deprotonates the compound containing an acidic hydrogen to form an enolate ion. The enolate ion is a nucleophile due to the presence of a negative charge on the oxygen atom.

Nucleophilic Addition:
The enolate ion attacks the carbonyl carbon of the active methylene compound, leading to the formation of an alkoxide intermediate.

Proton Transfer and Elimination:
Proton transfer occurs from the oxygen of the enolate to the oxygen of the alkoxide, leading to the release of the base. This step generates a β-unsaturated carbonyl compound.

Tautomerization (Optional):
Depending on the reactants and conditions, a tautomerization step may occur to stabilize the final product. For example, an enol form can tautomerize to a keto form.
