Contemporary valve adjustment on these AMC-design Jeep® inline engines is performed by choosing the correct length pushrods. This presentation addresses the fundamental design and valvetrain mechanisms of these engines. Traditional valve adjustment methods described have been superseded by selecting the right pushrods by length. An inexpensive CompCams or similar pushrod length checking tool is used for this procedure.
At the 4WD Mechanix Magazine Forums (https://forums.4WDmechanix.com), you will find extensive discussion of valvetrain adjustment and how to make pushrod choices for these engines. Visit the forums and search under "pushrod" or "valve adjustment" for details. One in-depth example is at https://forums.4wdmechanix.com/topic/.... This exchange applies to 232, 258, 4.0L and 2.5L engines. There are several other discussions. Always check and choose the right length pushrods after cylinder head surfacing, block decking, a camshaft change or a complete engine rebuild.
