STORYLINE
A delegation from Russian energy giant Gazprom were in Tehran on Sunday for a three-day trip to discuss cooperation in developing oil and gas fields.
Alexei Miller, Chairman of Board of Directors of the world's biggest natural gas supplier held talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as part of the visit.
Official IRNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad on Sunday as saying that Iran is willing to expand its cooperation with Russia in the oil and gas sphere "as much as it is possible."
In February a delegation from Gazprom made a visit to Iran to develop phases 19, 20 and 21 of the giant South Pars gas field, establish an Iranian-Russian joint company with the participation of a third country as well as joint cooperation in gas export.
During the previous visit, Miller and Iranian side agreed to include the company in the Iranian energy section.
Miller's visit Sunday comes only days after an announcement by French energy giant Total SA that political conditions were not right for investing in Iran, causing a serious blow to Tehran's efforts to develop its natural gas reserves.
Total has been in discussions about developing a liquid natural gas project linked to Iran's South Pars gas field with Malaysia's Petronas since 2006.
Total and oil majors have been under political pressure from the US and its allies over their activities in Iran amid mounting tensions over Iran's nuclear programme, which the US and other countries fear are aimed at building weapons but which Tehran insists are for producing nuclear energy.
Iran needs Western technology to liquefy gas from the field so it can be shipped and sold abroad.
The South Pars gas field project is expected to produce 751 (m) million cubic metres of natural gas a day when completed by 2014.
