The Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak greeted the last Polish troops who have returned from their mission. In total 33,000 soldiers have served in Afghanistan with 43 terminal casualties.
43 soldiers had not returned from Afghanistan, 200 were wounded, we remember them, we remember their families. Two years ago we updated the veteran affairs bill to extend support to veterans and their relatives.
The Polish army gained invaluable experience, the troops learned a lot, we were able to test our equipment and weapons in real combat situations.
Poland joined the US Operation - Enduring Freedom - in Afghanistan inIn 2001, sending a contingent of soldiers from the special unit - Grom - , along with sappers and logisticians.
In March 2002, the Polish Army assigned it’s first, 300-strong group to the International Security Assistance Force - ISAF. In 2007, Poland increased its contingent in Afghanistan to 1,200 soldiers and military employees and also assumed responsibility for two Afghan provinces.
After completing their ISAF mission, the Poles joined the Nato-led, non-combat mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces. The final contingent was part of the Resolute Support operation and numbered 400 soldiers and military employees.
