Marcia Lucas took eight weeks to craft the Death Star battle sequence, cutting the original two trench runs down to one and manufacturing an entirely new countdown element that didn't exist in Lucas's script. This ticking clock transformed the climax from a routine space battle into an edge-of-your-seat race against time.
The editing team also rewrote the opening crawl with Brian De Palma, cut the entire Tosche Station sequence, and made the crucial decision to kill off Obi-Wan Kenobi during the film. Every change was designed to maximize tension and emotional impact.
When Star Wars opened on May 25th, 1977, it earned $775 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. The innovations pioneered by this team – particularly the manufactured countdown and single objective structure – became the blueprint for modern blockbuster filmmaking.
