Journey of Seven Coffee Beans: How Baba Budan Brought Coffee to India”
The story of coffee being introduced to India through smuggling is an interesting part of history. According to legend, in the 17th century, a Sufi saint named Baba Budan is credited with bringing coffee to India. While on a pilgrimage to Mecca, he discovered coffee in Yemen. At the time, Arabs tightly controlled the coffee trade, forbidding the export of fertile coffee seeds.
Despite the restrictions, Baba Budan managed to smuggle seven coffee beans out of Yemen by hiding them in his robes. He brought these beans back to India and planted them in the hills of Chikmagalur, Karnataka. This marked the beginning of coffee cultivation in India, and today, the region is known for producing some of the finest coffee in the country.
The Baba Budan Giri hills, where he planted the beans, remain an important coffee-growing region in India. This smuggling of seven coffee beans is now a celebrated tale in Indian coffee history.
