📍 Summary:
Afghanistan has taken a major step toward energy self-sufficiency with the signing of contracts for five large-scale power generation projects totaling 845 megawatts. The agreements were signed between Azizi Group and Afghanistan’s national power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), in the presence of senior government officials including Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and prominent investor Mirwais Azizi.
The projects include 330 MW of solar power and 515 MW of coal-based thermal energy, designed to create a balanced mix between renewable and conventional energy sources. Officials say this combination will help stabilize electricity supply across multiple provinces while reducing Afghanistan’s long-standing dependence on imported power.
Geographically, the projects span several key provinces: solar plants in Kabul (Naghlu), Parwan (Barikab), and Ghazni, alongside coal power plants in Takhar and Baghlan. This nationwide distribution is expected to ease pressure on the national grid and strengthen electricity access for both urban and industrial zones.
With an estimated $463 million in investment, the solar projects are scheduled for completion within two years, while the coal plants are expected to take three years. Energy experts believe timely completion could generate thousands of jobs and pave the way for expanded industrial production. Business leaders stress that reliable 24-hour electricity is essential for factory growth and long-term economic stability.
Officials also linked these power initiatives to broader infrastructure plans, including regional energy and pipeline projects, emphasizing that improved energy supply will unlock Afghanistan’s mining, processing, and export potential. Analysts describe the agreements as a potential turning point toward sustainable economic development driven by domestic energy production.
