I Don’t Recruit for Banks, I Recruit for Corporate Treasury Roles

And if you’re in a bank thinking you can just “move into corporate treasury”, this will probably annoy you.
Banking treasury and corporate treasury are not the same thing.
They are different jobs, in different environments, and they take careers in different directions.

Yet straight after publishing it, I received a wave of CVs and messages from banking treasury professionals asking if I could find them their next role...
That’s the frustrating bit.

Not because banking treasury isn’t valuable.
But because being close to corporate treasurers is NOT the same as doing their job.

I know this because I started out recruiting banking treasury roles.
Heads of ALM. Liquidity. Capital. Risk.
Deep specialist roles, often in very narrow silos.
Corporate treasury is different.

Cash management is just one part of the role, alongside FX, debt, liquidity, systems, stakeholder management, and leading a team.
That breadth is what makes a corporate treasurer effective.
Which is why moving from banking treasury into corporate treasury is rarely a sideways step.

In reality, it often means:
Stepping back in title
Broadening scope significantly
Very often taking a pay cut to rebuild properly
That’s not a judgement. It’s just how the transition works.
And just to be clear, it can be done.

One of the people I’ve spoken to about it very successfully on my podcast is Keith Gaub at Bristol Myers Squibb.
He was in banking, and we talked very openly on the podcast about how he stepped down in title and compensation at the time to rebuild his experience from banking across into corporate treasury.
Then later on, he saw the payoff in terms of his career.

If you’re in banking and thinking about making that move:
1️⃣ Speak to real corporate treasurers and understand what the job actually involves
2️⃣ Be honest about the level you could operate at today and the reset you’re willing to accept
If you’ve done that, then we can have a sensible conversation.
If not, the right move is probably to speak to a specialist banking recruiter, and I’m happy to point you in that direction.

Staying in my lane is exactly what makes me useful to corporate treasury professionals.
