The former Governor of Hong Kong, Lord Patten, has told Times Radio that people in the UK should steer clear of using Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok.
Speaking to John Pienaar on Drive, the former Conservative minister was asked if people should "steer clear" of using TikTok over excessive data gathering concerns:
"Absolutely. Just as they should steer clear of universities who have any collaborative research ventures with Huawei or Hikvision, or any of the others which were involved in their surveillance. We have to recognise that there is no such thing as an 'independent company' in China, as indeed there are some multinationals, even ones based here, which operate in China and operate according to Chinese rules. And then it's not always in our interest."
And he had this advice to the UK government on how to handle China:
"I think we should have a policy on China, which is based on reciprocity, of behaving to them as they behave to us. I think it should based on transparency, saying what we think they should do, and what we are we are doing in relation to what they do. And I think it should also try to secure their cooperation when there are international issues like climate change which matter but then is when they don't do those things, when they break their word, we should call them out. And we shouldn't always accept that we have to recognise or play up to whatever there is their narrative about global affairs. They have one principle interest, and it's not provocative to say it, and that is for the Communist Party to stay in power. And that's, as Kevin Rudd the former Australian Prime Minister said, that is their number one, two and three priority. We have to recognise that. It's not our priority, but it's theirs"
He was also asked whether BBC Chairman Richard Sharp should remain in post:
"I suppose I've declined more interviews on this subject than any other because I couldn't think of anything that I could say that would be helpful to the BBC, which I think is a great treasured International institution. And my own view, is that I think I know what is both a conflict of interest and what is a perception of a conflict of interest. But I wouldn't lecture anybody else on it, but I know what I think."
