☕ A Paris café playlist for melancholic days — study, work, reading, or rest.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
It starts with rain.
Not the kind that announces itself — just a quiet grey settling over the rooftops, turning the Seine the colour of old silver. You step into a café on the left bank, the door heavy, the air warm with espresso and something baked hours ago. The waiter doesn't ask what you want. He already knows.
You sit by the window. Outside, a woman walks slowly along the river, her umbrella tilted against the wind. She doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Neither are you. The coffee arrives. You think about the last time you stood in that oval room at the Orangerie, surrounded by Monet's water lilies, and felt, for a moment, that time had simply stopped.
Autumn has come early to the Luxembourg Gardens. The chairs are scattered like afterthoughts, the fountain still running though no one is watching. Leaves gather in the corners of the paths, and the light has that golden, apologetic quality it only gets in October.
You walk along the quays. The bouquinistes have closed their green boxes for the day. One of them left a book open on the ledge — a first edition Baudelaire, its pages swollen with damp. You don't touch it. Some things are better left where they are. At the Carnavalet, you wander through rooms that smell of wax and history. A guard nods at you as if you've been here before. Maybe you have.
The rain stops by the time you reach the tip of the Île de la Cité. The Seine splits around you. A fisherman stands at the edge, patient as stone. You sit on a bench and watch the river carry leaves toward the sea. The galleries on the Rue de Seine are closing, their lights clicking off one by one. Through a window you see a houseboat rocking gently against the quay, a single lamp burning inside. Someone is home.
The sun breaks through just before it sets — a sudden golden wound across the sky. From the Île Saint-Louis you watch it paint the buildings amber, then rose, then grey again. A Bateau Mouche slides beneath the bridge, full of strangers taking photographs of a city that will never quite be theirs.
The chairs in the Tuileries are empty now. Green metal, cold to the touch. You sit in one anyway. The last light fades. On the walk home, you stop at Shakespeare & Company. The door is still open. Inside, someone is reading aloud in a language you almost understand. You stand on the pavement and listen, the river behind you, the city settling into night.

🌧️ Inspired by the banks of the Seine on a grey afternoon, when the old bookstalls have their covers down, and the city feels like it belongs only to you.
