AC Milan agrees €30m deal with Leverkusen for Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface
AC Milan have reached an initial verbal agreement to sign Nigerian striker Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal valued at €30 million. The agreement includes a €5m loan fee with a €24m buy option, not mandatory, running until 2026. If finalised, the 23-year-old will sign a long-term contract at San Siro until June 2030. Boniface joined Leverkusen from Union SG for €22m and impressed in his debut season, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists. He played a decisive role in their unbeaten Bundesliga triumph and Europa League final run. However, recurring injuries cut short his 2024-25 campaign. Milan sees Boniface as vital support for Gimenez as Massimiliano Allegri looks to bolster his attack. The move also continues Leverkusen’s summer exodus following the departures of Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah, and Granit Xhaka. For Boniface, the Serie A switch represents a chance to revive his career and return to form.
Liverpool full-back, Jeremie Frimpong ruled out until international break
Liverpool summer signing Jeremie Frimpong will miss key clashes against Newcastle and Arsenal after sustaining a hamstring injury. Head coach Arne Slot confirmed the £29.5m arrival from Bayer Leverkusen will be sidelined until after the international break in September. Frimpong was withdrawn in the 60th minute of Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth, with Slot explaining the medical team advised the substitution. “The medical staff were completely right,” Slot said. “It wasn’t about his performance, but we felt he had an issue with his hamstring. It was a good call—he’ll be back after the break.” The setback leaves Liverpool short at right-back, though Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez have recently returned from injury. Slot also suggested Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai could fill in. Despite his current absence, Frimpong boasts an excellent fitness record, having missed only four Bundesliga games across the past three seasons.
Mateta fires Eze-less Crystal Palace to European win amid transfer uncertainty
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a historic winner as Crystal Palace marked their debut in major European competition with a 1-0 victory over Norwegian side Fredrikstad in the first leg of their Conference League play-off at Selhurst Park. The evening was overshadowed by the absence of star midfielder Eberechi Eze, who was expected to start but was left out after phoning manager Oliver Glasner on Thursday morning to report feeling unwell. Sources, however, suggest the 27-year-old is close to sealing a move to Arsenal, further fuelling speculation over his future. Mateta broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, heading home to secure Palace’s advantage, though the hosts missed chances to extend their lead. Captain Marc Guéhi, still attracting interest from Liverpool, featured in the starting XI. Palace, who lifted the FA Cup in May, had anticipated Europa League football, but a UEFA ruling on multi-club ownership disputes saw them demoted to the Conference League, a decision upheld by CAS.
Tottenham turns attention to Villa star Morgan Rogers after Eze setback
North London club, Tottenham Hotspur have made Aston Villa winger Morgan Rogers their new priority target after missing out on Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, whose move was hijacked by Arsenal. According to The Independent, Spurs have already held initial talks with intermediaries to gauge the possibility of a deal, though Villa are reluctant to sell unless a substantial bid is tabled. Rogers, 21, is tied to Villa until 2030 and was recently crowned PFA Young Player of the Year, further boosting his value. Villa, however, continue to wrestle with PSR restrictions and past UEFA fines, which could eventually force them to consider offers. Reports suggest Rogers could cost upwards of £80m—potentially more than Eze. Tottenham’s pursuit comes amid mounting frustration after failed moves for Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Savinho. The club are also monitoring Maghnes Akliouche, Tyler Dibling, and Xavi Simons as alternatives. Spurs and Thomas Frank must now weigh whether to meet Villa’s hefty demands with a club-record offer.
