11 August 2016:
More than 100 people have been pulled from dangerous and overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean Sea by the Red Cross’s rescue boat overnight.
A further 121 women, children and men are now safely on board the Responder ship.
This brings the total number of people rescued to 448 since Monday’s launch of the Responder.
The Italian Red Cross, with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), is partnering with independent charity Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) in a joint life-saving mission on board the Responder.
The Responder is patrolling the Central Mediterranean route between North Africa and Italy where the majority of the 3,100 drownings this year have occurred. The Italian Red Cross is providing medical treatment, water, clothes, blankets and other emergency supplies to rescued people on board.
