Most countries are unlikely to attack India first because it is a nuclear-armed state with a nuclear triad, meaning it can launch nuclear weapons from land, air, and sea. This three-part capability makes its deterrence stronger and more survivable. Even if one part of the system were damaged, the others could still respond.
India’s land-based missiles, aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles together ensure what is called a second-strike capability. This means that if India were attacked with nuclear weapons, it would still be able to retaliate. The certainty of retaliation is what discourages other nuclear powers from launching a first strike.
Because of this, any country considering a major attack on India would have to calculate the risk of severe escalation. The presence of a sea-based nuclear force, in particular, makes deterrence stronger, since submarines are difficult to detect and destroy. This reduces the chances that an enemy could eliminate India’s nuclear forces in a surprise attack.
In addition, India follows a declared policy of “No First Use,” meaning it states it will not use nuclear weapons unless first attacked with them. While policies can evolve, this stance supports strategic stability and signals that its nuclear forces are primarily for deterrence, not aggression.
Overall, nuclear triad capability increases India’s security by raising the cost of aggression. It does not eliminate all conflict risks, but it makes large-scale or first-strike attacks far less likely because of the serious consequences involved.
