Mark Fisher argued that capitalist realism corrupts art by reducing it to a commodity, stripping it of its transformative potential, and embedding it within the market's logic. Art, under capitalism, becomes a tool for reinforcing the system rather than challenging it. Instead of serving as a site for radical imagination or dissent, art is co-opted into the spectacle of consumerism, where its value is tied to market trends, sponsorship deals, and media attention.
Fisher observed that even anti-capitalist gestures in art are often commodified, neutralizing their critique. Institutions, galleries, and art fairs prioritize profitability and brand partnerships over fostering genuine, disruptive creativity. This dynamic perpetuates the idea that art must align with business principles, making it complicit in sustaining capitalist realism rather than undermining it.
Fisher’s critique of cultural malaise—what he called "depressive hedonia"—applies here: art is increasingly preoccupied with immediate gratification and surface-level engagement, avoiding deeper or more unsettling truths. This flattening of creativity ensures art doesn’t challenge the status quo but rather reinforces it, all while presenting the illusion of freedom and diversity. For Fisher, reclaiming art’s radical potential means breaking free from this market-driven cycle and reimagining its role as a force for meaningful change.
This was a personal project for myself. Some concepts were analysed by me on a personal level which affected me allot mentally.
