Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has pitched for transferring the Centre’s Rs 1.7 lakh crore annual fertiliser subsidy directly into farmers’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Addressing the Pusa Krishi Vigyan Mela at IARI, Chouhan said DBT to farmers would give them the freedom to choose fertilisers and quantities, ensuring the subsidy reaches the actual beneficiary. He noted that a urea bag costing Rs 2,400 is currently sold to farmers at around Rs 265–270 due to government support.
The minister also stressed stronger monitoring of funds allocated to states for farm mechanisation and modern irrigation technologies, calling it “real reform.”
On farm credit, Chouhan said 75 per cent of small farmers are receiving KCC loans at an effective 4 per cent interest rate, while emphasising timely access to credit.
He outlined a multi-pronged strategy for agriculture, focusing on food security, nutritional output, and raising farmers’ incomes through integrated farming and innovation.
