A playthrough of Irem's 1993 fighting game for the Super Nintendo, Street Combat.
Played on the normal difficulty level.
A shadowy cabal led by C.J., a top assassin and tournament fighter, is planning to eighty-six a "global leader." A man named Steven, a scientist and Kung Fu master with an IQ of 900, is the only one capable of putting a stop to C.J.'s plot. Upon hearing the news, Steven dons a suit of armor that he invented "using his science skills" and enters the Street Combat tournament.
Street Combat is a reskinned localization of Ranma ½: Chounai Gekitouhen (らんま½ 町内激闘篇, lit. "Ranma ½: Neighborhood Battle"), a 1992 Super Famicom game from NCS that was based on the Ranma ½ manga and anime. Oddly, though Irem stripped the game of its licensed material, its direct sequel (Ranma ½: Hard Battle) made its way to North America and Europe fully intact a mere seven months after Street Combat landed.
That bit of trivia is probably the most interesting thing about Street Combat. Divorced from that context - the way Irem presented it to North America in the spring of 1993 - Street Combat was only notable for being the worst Street Fighter 2-like fighting game on the SNES at the time of its release.
The Japanese version was no gem. The controls were sloppy and suffered from a hideous amount of input lag, the animation was choppy, and the mechanics had the depth of a teaspoon, but it at least had some charming sprite art and a stable of familiar characters to fall back on. Street Combat has no such advantages. The new character designs are tacky and stupid, the new music is cheesy and annoying, and the gameplay is just as borked as it was in the original Japanese release.
To be willing to put their name on something like this, Irem must've been terrified of missing out on the Street Fighter 2 gravy train.
Go to Hell, Steven. You suck.
