EV, HEV, PHEV, I.C.E. – Understanding the Difference

Описание: PHEVs, EVs, Hybrids, I.C.Es… this alphabet soup actually represents types of vehicles you can find on the road today and in this video we go over what makes them different.

Standard hybrids, like the OG Toyota Prius, run on electricity at lower speeds, like around the city, but tap into their I.C.E at higher speeds like highway driving. The standard hybrid usually doesn’t feature a rechargeable plug-in battery but actually generates electricity through regenerative braking and the I.C.E.

Then there are P.H.E.Vs: Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles. These are a step closer to being fully electric, but still have an I.C.E. They differ from standard hybrids because they do feature a plug in rechargeable battery.

And then there’s EVs, aka electric vehicles… These vehicles do not have an I.C.E. They are 100% electric with zero emissions. They are similar to PHEVs in that you plug them in, but there’s no I.C.E to fall back on.
The good thing is, without a combustion engine there’s a lot less complexity under the hood and more room for the battery so you can travel much further, fully electric. Take the Chevy Bolt for example with it’s 259 mile range on nothing but electricity…
