Monophonic Playlist Compiled by Kieran Daly, April-September, 2025

Описание: The focus here is on (excerpts of) music—principally post-20th c.—that could've only been articulated by a monophonic texture in order to convey its compositional principles specific to the texture as a fundamental systematic criterion. The music does not use monophony as merely a larger 'piece' or sub-genre of one's work that which can be found elsewhere systemically articulated polyphonically, multiphonically, homophonically, or heterophonically. (Notice I do not mention contrapuntal textures, which can be, of course, monophonically conveyed. cf. Babbitt, "My Ends…" [1978]). There are many great solo pieces for Western monophonic instruments like woodwinds, brass, etc., however they are sufficiently, not necessarily, monophonic. Just like there are many pieces composed for electronic media that aren't necessarily electronic. I have since become cautious to refer to the primary focus of my own work as monophonic music, and not 'solos', 'unaccompanied', etc. anymore.

The two columns of tracks are only a function of the two sittings in which I compiled them; a relatively arbitrary division, except the second column is arguably a bit more 'coherent' as a set of sonically contiguous tracks (timbral/structural commonalities, etc).
