In February 2026, James Oliver Unick, 64, was found guilty of the 1982 rape and murder of 13-year-old Sarah Geer in Cloverdale, California a crime that remained unsolved for nearly 44 years.
Case Breakthrough
DNA Profile: Although a male DNA profile was developed from evidence in 2003, it did not match any existing law enforcement databases at the time.
Genetic Genealogy: In 2021, investigators used forensic genetic genealogy to narrow the search to one of four brothers.
Cigarette Evidence: FBI agents surveilling Unick collected a discarded cigarette he had been smoking. DNA from the cigarette provided a direct match to the crime scene evidence, leading to his arrest in July 2024.
Trial and Verdict
Defense: During the trial, Unick claimed the sexual encounter was consensual and that a "phantom man" must have committed the murder afterward.
Verdict: On February 13, 2026, a Sonoma County jury rejected Unick's account and found him guilty of murder with a special-circumstance finding for sexual assault after just two hours of deliberation.
Sentence: Unick faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. His formal sentencing is scheduled for April 23, 2026.
Note on similar cases: Another recent case solved via DNA involves the 1974 murder of Barbara Waldman, where Thomas Generazio was identified as the killer 52 years later in March 2026.
