Nebraska is usually associated with endless prairie, farmland, Sandhills, and quiet rural communities. But hidden across the Great Plains are abandoned settlements, forgotten railroad towns, failed industrial communities, and small places now struggling to survive as population and economic activity continue to disappear.

In this documentary, we explore 15 ghost towns and fading communities across Nebraska.

The journey begins in Antioch, once known as the “Potash Capital of America,” where massive concrete industrial ruins still rise from the prairie after the World War I boom collapsed. Steele City and Venus reveal another side of Nebraska’s decline, where old storefronts, churches, schools, and rural infrastructure remain as reminders of communities left behind by changing transportation and agriculture.

At Dobytown, almost nothing remains of a once-rowdy Oregon Trail stop, while St. Deroin shows how the Missouri River itself can erase a town. Spring Ranch preserves the memory of a pioneer trading settlement lost to fire and shifting commerce.

Other communities were weakened by industrial modernization. Amboy, Pauline, and Roscoe all depended heavily on mills, railroads, or highway traffic that eventually moved elsewhere.

The journey then turns toward towns that have not completely disappeared, but are moving dangerously close to that point. Brewster, Verdel, Belvidere, Keystone, Hay Springs, and Minatare reveal the demographic pressure facing rural Nebraska as younger generations leave, businesses close, and public services become harder to maintain.

Some Nebraska towns disappeared quickly. Others have been fading for generations.

Together, these places reveal a forgotten side of the Great Plains—where abandoned buildings, rusting infrastructure, empty roads, and silent cemeteries show just how fragile a small American community can become when its economic purpose disappears.
