Fowl Play is Popeye’s 55th short, released December 17, 1937, by Fleischer Studios under the direction of Dave Fleischer and Dave Tendlar. In this 7-minute black-and-white gem, Popeye gifts Olive a charming, pipe-smoking parrot that sings and dances to “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.” But jealousy erupts when Bluto, wielding an axe, frees the bird and threatens it. Popeye rushes in, the battle erupts, and when spinach enters the picture, Bluto ends up caged while the parrot triumphantly reprises his tune. The parrot (voiced by Jack Mercer) steals the show with witty commentary, and Olive's fainting becomes a recurring comic beat.
