Flotsam Festival is an annual surf film and photography festival that takes place on the Gold Coast of Australia each May.
After initially pursuing architecture, you shifted into the surfboard industry after a transformative holiday. Mentored by two industry masters, Paul Halis and Ab, you learned shaping, glassing, and developed a deep respect for craftsmanship and community. Despite financial challenges in the industry, your passion for creating custom boards and seeing surfers thrive kept you dedicated. When Ab passed away, you felt a renewed commitment to honor his legacy by continuing the business, Burning Spears. Your journey reflects resilience, the importance of community, and a love for surfing, which motivates you to keep shaping high-quality boards for surfers of all levels.
I had this dream I was going to be an architect and then basically it just I came over here for a holiday and just went that on making surfboards I tried in the South island there weren't many surfboard Shapers and surfboard companies so I just wanted to have a go so I got basically taught by two masters of the industry and so there's Paul halis lucky he took me under his wing and um he showed me all my glassing and everything and then after sort of meeting ab ab show me all the shaping I look back now and was just so lucky that I got taught from the best shaper in the world to me best shaper in the world to the best Glasser in the world you know and just personally too their sort of work ethic their Community sort of ethic it was just yeah it's gold like when you shave someone to surf board you worry about it you worry it's going to work and then and you make a board and someone goes oh it does this it does that but then you give that board to someone else and it's the best board ever it's so I've sort of learned that everybody's different and you'll never please everybody to me the best most rewarding thing is the guys like out at Chan you know like if you go out at Chan
on a good day there's bures beers everywhere you know and and everybody's smiling it's little sort of club and then there'll be when it's K's pumping you know and a guy is getting bared on an 86 Channel bottom you know everybody's oh they're board they're board you know and to me everybody's rewarding you know from the being later he's loves a channel bottom uh recently been working with uh Harry Bryant um and then Brad GAC Spencer hard Graves they like the sort of Pro X Pros beginners are great too you know you get the beginner that's never especially a channel Bottom never
experienced what a channel bottom does and then they're just like their level's gone up to the next level of Surfing and that's the best thing saying just before I died I I was off the industry I hated nearly hated making surfboards back in yeah 10 years ago when it was it was a hard SLO people were undercutting everybody boards weren't you know you're lucky to make a $100 profit if you're getting a cheap board you're not paying the person's people working making the board so you know as a surfer you should respect the people making your board you know cuz factories are not cheap I work from myself and so being able to pay myself you know is and pay all your bills that's probably the hardest part of the industry I think people will have to come to rail life surf boards will be over $11,000 now you know I'm not talking about my boards I'm talking about across the industry you know that it's about paying the Sanders and glasses have been paid the same for like 20 years you know that's
it's just so it's just criminal most people leave the industry like most people I was pretty much flat I'm
leaving I'm out of this industry I'm going to do something else and then when AB died and the community the surfing Community sort of came all together and that's where I realised that and in the industry how tight we are and that's where I just went no I can't leave this industry you know and ab always told me Jo you you'll come back and and I was just like nah I'm out you know and then
and then when he after he passed away I just had a whole different Outlook just it was more to do with the industry the community of the industry and it's so important to keep people like Alan current he taught me everything about a surfboard basically and so I have to honor that that's how I look at
it and cuz people say to me you should go why don't you go out on your own and but I am out on my own but under your name it's so I am under my name I just I'm people know I make burning Spears
but it's to me it's honouring Allan.
