Hey there, my friends! Welcome to our exciting lab where we'll delve into the world of First Hop Redundancy Protocol (FHRP) and explore Cisco's Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP). HSRP plays a vital role in computer networks by ensuring seamless connectivity even if a router fails.
In this lab, we'll focus on HSRP version 2, which also supports IPv6 addresses and allows for the configuration of multiple HSRP groups (VLANs). However, for simplicity, we'll concentrate on VLAN 1. Before we jump in, you can take a quick look at our lab topology.
Our objective is to configure HSRP to achieve redundancy and load balancing between two routers. We'll designate one router as the active router responsible for forwarding traffic, while the other will serve as the standby router, ready to take over if the active router fails. We'll achieve this using the "priority" command. Highest Priority=Active Router.
To set up our network, we'll assign a shared virtual IP address of 10.0.0.10/24 as the default gateway. This virtual IP will be used by the PCs in our network as default router. Additionally, we've already assigned IP addresses of 10.0.0.11 and 10.0.0.12 to two PCs connected to our network.
During the testing phase, we'll simulate a router failure by cutting the links to the active router. By doing so, we can observe that the pings sent by the PCs to the destination IP address of 3.3.3.3 will be routed through the earlier Standby router (which in case becomes Active). You can also use the "tracert" command to trace the packet's journey through the network.
Lastly, we'll demonstrate the impact of the "preempt" command. This command allows the standby router to take over as the active router immediately, even if the current active router hasn't failed; provided the standby router later takes a higher priority.
By the end of this lab, you'll gain a clear understanding of FHRP, specifically HSRP, and its crucial role in providing redundancy and high availability in network environments. So let's dive right in and get started with our exciting lab!
