★ 🇨🇭 Fahrwangen-Meisterschwanden - Wohlen cab ride, Switzerland [04.1995] (no longer exists)

Описание: In this video, we get another peak into a railway that no longer exists, thanks to Andreas Perren. We have passed Wohlen in past videos, it is situated on the line between Lenzburg/Othmarsingen and Rotkreuz.

The line was opened in 1916 (mid World War I) after a prolonged construction period due to a shortage of workers and some materials.

As you could imagine, the passenger numbers weren't that high, but what was missing in passengers was made up for in freight. Talk of closing the line began in 1957, however the decision was made to keep it open and convert the DC power system to the same 15 kV 16.6 Hz system that the SBB operated.

In 1994, the railway lost their biggest freight customer, Ferrowohlen, a steel factory that had to cease business due to lower demand and increased competition. The SBB also decided to take Wohlen out of the wagonload freight network, making it harder for customers to move their goods by rail. This led to the closure of the Meisterschwanden - Wohlen railway in 1997. The tracks were removed by 1999.

Today a section of the line in Wohlen is still used as a freight connection.
