Complete Build & first little tests of the New Tamiya CC-01 Longheroni Chassis Conversion Kit from 3DRap. Will this give new life to the old 1993 Tamiya CC-01? Can we still call it a CC-01? And will the 3D printed parts hold up? So far so good ... more thoughts below!
The kit was kindly supplied by 3DRap, free for review and tests. You can check it out here with this (non-affiliate!) link: https://www.3drap.it/scalers/

Some thoughts:
First of all I have to say that the ingenuity of many of today's small 3D print companies keeps impressing me with their design quality and precision. 3DRap is no exception. I will leave it up to you to decide if this is too large an alteration to the CC-01 chassis, but it's nice with the option, for those who would like to try it out. Some of the things that this chassis will improve on:
stronger gear box
direct steering
options for smaller pinion gears (lower gear ratio)
option for fitting 'non-rounded' larger modern LiPo batteries
options for longer shocks
Secondly, I encountered some small issues that are worth to mention here:
1) The gears seem a little tight compared to the original gear box. I have been insured by 3DRap that it is perfectly normal. It is done to ensure that the gears won't start slipping. I definitely have had my issues with this with the stock gear box and destroyed a whole gear set. I hope the Longheroni will do better. It definitely seems more promising with the metal-to-metal screws and nuts that hold it together, compared to the stock CC-01 gear box cover that is held together with screws into plastic.
2) After a lot of effort I had to give up trying to fit the complete 3D printed rubber seal - and decided to cut one part. Apart from that, the rubber seal seems a little loose - in the places where there is no screws holding it down. I have no doubt that with no extra sealing (adding extra grease or rubber etc.) the gear box will be a little exposed to sand and dirt.
3) I was informed that the conversion kit was a direct fit to the stock CC-01. I definitely learned that the stock CC-01 servo saver or CC-01 servo horns doesn't fit with this chassis and a much longer servo horn is needed to make the steering work properly. 3DRap ensured me that the information will be included in the product description from now on. I am sure it is no problem for the many folks who already are running their CC-01 with one of the usual long alloy servo horn upgrades.
4) It also seems that there is no guidance to which CC-01 kit bodies will be a direct fit to the new chassis. It seems as some of the older ones will fit, as parts for the traditional rear-body-mount are included. But there is definitely a possibility of having to get a whole new body with no pre-drilled holes (or drill new extra holes in your old one - which isn't really a option) or having to construct your own body mounts. As seen in the video the CC-01 Landfreeder body is definitely not a direct fit to the longheroni chassis.
The CC-01 featured in the video is the Tamiya Landfreeder. It is almost stock. You can check out the specifications and the optional parts in the last video in this series: • Tamiya CC-01 Longheroni Conversion Kit Unb...
