Contrary to its name, the Sendai morning market is open through the afternoon and early evening, offering hot and delicious Japanese street foods and warm hospitality to visitors. Filled with local mom and pop shops, Sendai Asaichi is known for tasty treats, from savory treats made with their regional Sendai miso to unexpected beef tongue dishes.

Shizuka also learns about a local “God of Fortune,” Sendai Shiro (仙台 四郎), and visits the temple where he is enshrined. Legend has it that Sendai Shiro was a kind man with an intellectual disability, who was always smiling. All of the shops where he was warmly welcomed prospered, so he was considered a good luck charm by the businesses in the area. Their prosperity is a testament to the value of kindness and hospitality, and today Sendai Shiro’s image can be seen in many restaurants in the area.
