Описание: Lamin Village, Gambia. Sorry about the quality. I recorded this video 15 years ago (summer of 2004) on my first visit to Gambia and Senegal to study the ekonting. The first half of the series (Parts 1 and 2) show Jola musicians led by Ekona Jatta making an ekonting the traditional way. I ran out of video tape (yep, I did say fifteen years ago); so most of the second half of the series (Parts 3 and 4) consist of me back home in Boston demonstrating the tying-on technique and tuning details. (Please excuse my dated hairstyle.) Note the sand-filled gourd, and the fact that a hole is made in the gourd, not as a sound hole, but as a "sand" hole--to let the sand out of the gourd after the skin has been affixed! A second, more decorative hole is also made. The sand is to provide stability to the gourd while being manipulated by several very strong guys.
