Currently, many govt employees are still receiving conveyance allowance based on the old rates introduced in 2005. Over the years, fuel prices and transportation costs have increased significantly, but the allowance has not been revised accordingly.
In 2012, a limited increase in conveyance allowance was made for BPS-01 to BPS-15 employees, and in 2014, only a 5% increase was granted for lower scales. However, BPS-16 to BPS-22 employees did not receive any increase, which has raised concerns among government servants.
With petrol prices increasing dramatically over the last two decades, government employees are demanding a major increase in conveyance allowance in the Budget 2025-26. Many employee associations are demanding at least a 100% increase in the allowance to compensate for rising transport costs.
The Pay and Pension Commission has also recommended reviewing pay and allowances, including conveyance allowance, medical allowance, and house rent allowance, to provide relief to government employees, pensioners, and family pensioners.
