This was a very satisfying project. I've wanted to build a cedar strip canoe since the first time I saw one at the age of about 14. 32 years later, I finally had sufficient time and space to do just that. It took about 4 months and approximately 200 hours to complete.
Details about the boat:
I purchased Ted Moore's book Canoecraft (https://www.bearmountainboats.com/pro...)
which I studied voraciously. I also ordered the DVD instructional video from Bear Mountain Boats starring Nick Offerman ( • Видео . I found his tutelage very helpful; also Adam from "A Guy Doing Stuff" ( / @aguydoingstuffadam ) was very helpful through his instructional videos on YouTube. Thanks Adam!!!!
I built this boat from cedar deck boards which I bought from Home Depot. I ripped the boards in 1/4" thicknesses then machined the bead and cove into each piece. The decks on the canoe are composed of zebra wood and oak. I inlayed a blue maple leaf with a metal airplane inside it to recognize my career path in life. To me it represents setting a long term goal and never giving up.
I used oak for the inner gunwales and fir on the outer gunwales seats and thwart. Speaking of the thwart, my lovely wife designed it and I cut it out and shaped it. She also taught me how to manipulate a sewing machine for the nylon straps I used for the seats.
I used about 35 feet of fiberglass cloth on both the outside and inside which I saturated with East System Epoxy. There are 4 coats of epoxy on the outside and 3 on the inside. I finished it up with 3 coats of a good varnish. In total, all of the supplies cost about $1500 Canadian.
I've also posted a walk around video here:
