The Story Behind "Wake Me Up When September Ends"
While many of the songs on American Idiot follow the fictional story of "Jesus of Suburbia," this 2004 ballad is one of Billie Joe Armstrong’s most raw and autobiographical tracks.

The Interesting Fact: The song was written in memory of Billie Joe’s father, Andrew Armstrong, who passed away from esophageal cancer on September 1, 1982, when Billie Joe was only 10 years old. On the day of the funeral, a young Billie Joe reportedly ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother knocked on the door to check on him, he simply replied, "Wake me up when September ends." He held onto that sentence for over 20 years before he finally felt emotionally ready to turn it into a song.
