*Respiratory Protection Guidelines for Rig Operations*
The Rig Operator or service company must ensure that all respiratory protection equipment is provided, well maintained, and used as intended to safeguard personnel from hazardous atmospheres. Employees who require respiratory protection must receive thorough training covering the following:
*The Need for Respiratory Protection:* Why protection is necessary and the reasons for selecting a particular type of respirator.
*Operation and Limitations:* How the respirator works, its capabilities, limitations, and the proper fitting of face pieces.
*Usage Procedures:* Instructions for donning and doffing respirators, relevant regulations, and emergency procedures.
*Maintenance:* Guidance on inspection, cleaning, storage, and ensuring a proper seal and function of the face piece.
*Maintenance and Inspection Requirements:*
Respiratory protection equipment must be readily available, maintained in good working order, kept in sanitary condition, and inspected every 30 days per Standard.
Inspections should include:
Checking the tightness of connections.
Assessing the condition of the respiratory inlet covering, head harness, valves, connecting tubes, harness assemblies, and hoses.
Verifying the proper function of regulators and alarms.
Inspecting each rubber or elastomeric part for pliability and signs of deterioration.
Ensuring each air cylinder is fully charged and carries a current hydro-test date.
A record of inspection dates must be maintained for each respirator used for emergency or rescue purposes.
*Parts Replacement and Repair:*
Only certified technicians may perform replacement of parts and repairs.
Replacement parts must be those designated for the specific respirator.
*Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Requirements:*
Equipment should include compliant 15-minute and 30-minute SCBA units, or hose-line work masks that incorporate an emergency escape cylinder.
No personnel should enter areas where the oxygen content is less than 20% by volume without an appropriate atmospheric-supplying respirator or in areas contaminated by harmful airborne substances, unless adequately protected.
*Quantity and Usage:*
On all drilling and workover rigs operating in known H₂S areas or on any rig drilling a wildcat well, the minimum required amount of respiratory protection equipment must be provided as per the drilling/workover contract.
Respiratory protection equipment must be used strictly in accordance with the original equipment manufacturer’s instructions, guidance, and limitations.
These guidelines ensure that respiratory protection measures are consistently maintained and effectively utilized to protect all personnel from dangerous atmospheres on rig operations.
