After spending time in Banyuwangi on the Indonesian island of Java, we caught the train to Surabaya to see all that the city had to offer before getting back to the train station to get the train to Yogyakarta. There we spent time exploring one of Indonesia's most vibrant cultural centres, trying the street food, seeing the art, the music, and most importantly the nearby UNESCO world heritage sites.
We visited the Borobudur Temple Compounds to see the world's largest Buddhist temple and took a guided tour which allowed us to climb onto the structure itself. The next day we visited the Prambanan Temple Compounds to see the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia and also visit the nearby temples of Sewu, Bubrah and Lumbung. Whilst Prambanan Temple was very busy, we were the only visitors to the other temples, allowing us to enjoy these heritage sites in the most peaceful setting.
