How can we best identify and reduce suicide risk among people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), especially among those with depression?
On Feb. 25, 2020, psychologist Lily Brown, Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania spoke about her work in this area, in a lecture hosted by the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation as part of the Emerging Scholars Exchange Program.
She described how trauma survivors who develop PTSD are at significantly greater risk for suicide compared to the general population, and compared the relative contribution of PTSD, depression, and social disconnection to suicide risk throughout treatment for individuals who have been exposed to trauma. She presented preliminary findings on digital phenotyping, wherein a patient’s digital "fingerprint" is modeled using smartphones and wearable devices to predict depression and suicide risk.
