How to Photograph the Solar Eclipse

Описание: As you may know, the solar eclipse is coming up soon! I was STOKED when I found out my friends at @PrintiqueLLC and ‪@Adorama‬ were launching Space Camp, a week of space-based content around photographing solar events, and they wanted me to help you photograph the eclipse. Here's my advice on photographing the solar eclipse!

1️⃣ Use an ND filter
An ND (neutral density) filter is basically like sunglasses for your lens. You'll need to use an ND filter if you want to capture the eclipse anytime before or after totality. While you may be able to make your 10-stop ND filter work, it's well worth picking up a 16-stop for better results to capture this rare event.

2️⃣ Pick the right focal length
You won't be able to capture great eclipse shots with your wide-angle lens. I recommend using a MINIMUM of 300mm for a solar eclipse, but more zoom is generally better. My personal preference is around 600mm, but depending on how much negative space you'd like in your frame and how much you're willing to crop will dictate the proper focal length. If you have your ND filter, you can practice shooting at different focal lengths in the days leading up to the eclipse to see the size of the sun once the big moment arrives.

3️⃣ Use manual focus
Focusing on the ring of the sun during the eclipse MIGHT work, but many cameras will struggle to focus. For this reason, I recommend using manual focus and dialing in your focus in the minutes leading up to the total solar eclipse. You don't want to mess around with your settings when the eclipse is in totality!

4️⃣ Pick the correct settings
Choose f/11 and ISO 100, and you can't go wrong! Adjust the shutter speed as you see fit. Many photographers like the very over-exposed look (longer shutter) or the under-exposed look (faster shutter). Neither is necessarily better than the other; it all just comes down to personal preference!
