Gilbert Martinez, harpsichord
This harpsichord was built by Derek Adlam (Adlam Burnett) in 1974. It was the very first harpsichord heard by this performer on an LP, "16th Century English Virginal Music" as recorded by Trevor Pinnock on CRD Records. This instrument was owned by the English "Doyenne of the harpsichord" Jill Severs, and her husband, Maurice Cochrane, the harpsichord technician and supplier to The English Concert, and countless other groups in the British early music scene.
During the 1st pandemic lockdown, this instrument was purchased by Gilbert Martinez from the family of Jill Severs and Maurice Cochrane.
It had much use in its former life, and was featured in many concerts and iconic recordings. Erik Kristiansen made repairs to the soundboard, and added a traditional Flemish style painting. He also made a fresh stringing schedule.
Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen gave the instrument a complete musical restoration, including a new voicing.
This video is dedicated to their combined efforts, and to the musical legacy of Jill Severs, Maurice Cochrane, and Trevor Pinnock.
