Описание: Russia has showcased tank drills near the Ukrainian border, as both Moscow and Kyiv appeared to be moving military towards the potential conflict zone.

The developments come as NATO scheduled an “extraordinary” meeting for alliance foreign ministers on Friday to “discuss Russia’s military buildup in and around Ukraine” and broader security issues.

The virtual session chaired by NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg comes ahead of a NATO-Russia Council meeting on 12 January.

There is acute concern over war breaking out between Vladimir Putin’s forces and pro-Western Ukraine.

Some 100,000 Russian troops plus heavy military equipment are said to be on Ukraine’s border.

Footage shows the Russian army engaging in tank exercises in harsh winter conditions less than 40 miles from the Ukrainian border.

A report on Zvezda TV, run by the Russian defence ministry, claimed the forces were preparing for a “tank biathlon” during a ten-day long New Year holiday.

“The T-72 fire control system locks onto the target and automatically maintains the direction of the turret during manoeuvres,” said the report.

A report on Zapiski Okhotnika Telegram channel claimed that Russia had continued moving equipment as the holidays got underway.

“Russia continues to deploy various military equipment in districts of Bryansk Region in border areas with Ukraine,” said a caption on the footage.

The movements included special machinery at Bryansk-Lgovsky station, possible for the transport of diesel fuel for the military.
