In the late 1910s, multi-instrumentalist Earl Fuller was one of the nation’s most successful orchestra leaders. With a steady gig leading the house orchestra at Manhattan’s exclusive Rector’s restaurant, contracts with Victor, Columbia, Edison, Emerson, and Gennett, and up and coming stars like Ted Lewis, Teddy Brown, and Harry Raderman passing through his bands, Fuller’s presences was felt from coast to coast. This set of 15 recordings looks at the Rector Novelty Orchestra, Fuller’s main band and one which recorded prolifically for Columbia Records. With the distinctive sound of xylophone, saxophone, and violin lead supported by a cacophony of syncopation in the rhythm and brass countermelody, the band has a huge and often driving sound. When applied to the day’s hits and popular rag-a-jazz melodies, the results were infectious and highly danceable. Highlights of this particular set of recordings include the band’s take on several future jazz and ragtime staples like “I Ain’t Got Nobody Much,” “Down Home Rag,” “Russian Rag,” “Pork and Beans,” “Ida,” and “12th Street Rag.” Other notable moments are the lightening speed one-steps the band had a knack for, including the unstoppable “Cold Turkey.”
