On 18 May 1974, deep inside the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, India conducted its first underground nuclear test at Pokhran, nearly 100 meters below the ground.
The mission was called “Smiling Buddha”, carried out on Buddha Purnima, and remained so secret that even foreign satellites couldn’t detect it immediately.
Officially, India called it a Peaceful Nuclear Explosion —
but the message to the world was clear:
India had entered the nuclear era.
This was not just a blast —
it was the birth of India’s nuclear identity.
