What does a manatee center really teach us?
When we visited the Manatee Observation and Education Center in Fort Pierce, Florida, we expected to learn about one species. Instead, we discovered how deeply connected Florida’s ecosystem truly is.
Manatees can weigh over 1,000 pounds and eat up to 10% of their body weight in sea grass every day. That makes healthy sea grass beds essential to their survival.
But sea grass depends on clean water.
And clean water depends on balance — herbivorous fish that control algae, invertebrates like sea cucumbers that recycle nutrients, and an ecosystem working together beneath the surface.
The Indian River Lagoon, where this center is located, is one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America. It supports hundreds of species — including seasonal manatees that rely on these waters for survival.
Education centers like this help communities understand how water quality, conservation, and ecosystem balance impact marine life in real and visible ways.
