The Deer Herd Reduction Program, a long-standing partnership between the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Parks Canada, helps restore ecological balance on Hill Island while strengthening cultural connections to the land. Each December, hunters—especially youth—take part in a carefully monitored hunt that offers hands-on learning, mentorship, and traditional harvesting skills. The program continues to benefit the environment and the Akwesasne community, providing thousands of pounds of deer meat each year and creating lasting learning experiences for future generations.
