Symphony No 30 'Lonely Horizons'

The title is taken from a Tone Poem I composed in 1980, called "Legends from the Lonely Horizon", which eventually became the first movement of Symphony No 2. Here the title invites the listener to imagine how they view three different horizons:

1: Finlandian - evokes the land and nature that captivated the imagination of Sibelius. At daybreak or sunset the forests, mountains, streams and plateaux stretch out into the distance, half in light and half shrouded in mystery. What happens in this mostly unseen world where sky meets land too far away to know directly?

2: Tranquillitus - nature surrounds us in the daylight hours, yet even so we see only the surface. Always something is hidden, unknown, a realm beyond our senses. The power and grandeur is palpable, though, and we are left in awe of the majesty of life and structure.

3: Mysterium - at night only vague shadows and arcane shapes are visible. Sounds of creatures that cross the night are at once fearsome and reassuring. In this mostly hidden world our eyes struggle to resolve all that is hidden on the horizon. The more we stand in the calmmess and anticipation of what extends into the distance, the more we realise that we are a mere thread in a cloak of vastness and beauty. We know then that the far-away shapes we seek to understand are in fact the observer; they look at us also.
