July 19th, 1941. The open grasslands of Moldova.

Soviet forces were retreating in stages, the frontline holding just long enough for other units to fall back. Among them was a young sniper: Lyudmila Pavlichenko – just another soldier trying to survive the chaos of war. She hadn’t yet earned the name the world would soon give her: Lady Death.

Lying in a trench with her Mosin–Nagant rifle, Lyudmila spotted an enemy soldier sprinting through an opening. She caught him in her scope… lost him… then found him again. Her finger rested on the trigger.

But she hesitated.

The thought of taking a life froze her in place.

What she did next would set the foundation for one of the most legendary snipers in history. Forged by war, love, loss, and relentless battles, Pavlichenko would go on to duel enemy snipers, survive near-death encounters, and become the deadliest woman of World War II.

And she had a message for the Nazis:

“Every Nazi who remains alive will kill women, children, and old folks. Dead Nazis are harmless. Therefore, if I kill a Nazi, I am saving lives.”
