Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips is under fire as her role in the grooming gangs inquiry comes under threat, but several victims have spoken out in her defence, saying she should not have to resign.
Four victims recently quit an advisory panel and called for Phillips to step down, sparking political pressure. However, Labour MP Natalie Fleet and five other victims have publicly backed Phillips, saying she’s devoted her life to giving women and girls a voice.
Fleet defended Phillips on Chopper’s Political Podcast, insisting she “will not let there be a stitch up” and that the inquiry will be “proper, fair, and independent.”
The row comes as a new law change, championed by both Phillips and Fleet, comes into force on Monday, ensuring rapists who impregnate their victims will no longer have parental rights over those children.
