Parents were in bed, kids tucked in down the hall, phones charging on nightstands with no alerts, no warnings, no sirens cutting through the darkness. What they did not know was that thirty miles upstream, the Guadalupe had already risen thirty feet in less than six hours. The water was moving at twelve thousand cubic feet per second, carrying entire trees and propane tanks like toys. By the time anyone realized what was happening, the river was already inside their homes.
