Paul Brereton, head of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), has stepped back from defence investigations due to perceived conflicts of interest.
A Senate inquiry found that he was granted special permission to stay in the reserves past retirement age to assist with the Afghanistan war crimes investigation.
