In this Spotlight video, we meet Charlie, a Volunteer Cadet Instructor with the London Fire Brigade Fire Cadets. Charlie shares his inspiring personal story — from growing up with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), entering care, and facing bullying, to finding confidence, purpose, and community through volunteering.
The Fire Cadets programme offers people aged 13 to 17 across London the chance to gain life-changing skills. Cadets learn firefighting techniques, improve their communication and teamwork, and grow in confidence — all while having fun and making new friends. The scheme is free to join and is run one evening a week at fire stations across London.
Volunteer Cadet Instructors, like Charlie, play a vital role. They help shape the next generation, support young people’s development, and gain valuable skills.

💬 Charlie’s message: If you’re facing challenges or just looking for a new purpose, take that first step — Fire Cadets could make a real difference to your life.
